James Cook was originally a musician and songwriter for the band Flamingoes. His first book, Memory Songs - an exploration of the music that shaped the 90s - was published by Unbound in May 2018. His second, In Her Room: How Music Helped Me Connect with My Autistic Daughter was published by Bonnier Books UK in April 2020.

He is currently an editor at Review 31 magazine. His short fiction and essays have appeared in the anthologies Vagabond Holes (Fremantle Press) and Garden Among Fires (Dodo Ink). A regular contributor to the Times Literary Supplement, his journalism and essays have also appeared in the Guardian, the Saturday Telegraph, Art Review, Boundless magazine, Litro, 3:AM magazineMinor Lits, and Review 31, among others. 

In 2017, with his twin brother, novelist Jude Cook, James was a guest on the award-winning literary podcast Backlisted. In 2024, he returned to talk about Michael Powell's 'A Life in Movies' Backlisted

In 2020, he was part of the short story judging panel for the Young Muslim Writers Awards. 

 He lives in London.
